Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-powerpc-smp Version: 2.6.26-13 Severity: normal Howdy kernel team, I've had this problem for years[1], on two different models of PowerMac, with multiple different sets of memory modules (because I was assured--wrongly, it seems--that I might have bad DIMMs). I have 1GB of RAM but can only use 768MB of it because permitting the kernel to enable its highmem code for PowerPC causes grave instability. On a modern kernel (2.6.26), I can't even get as far as the X server starting up. (By instability, I mean various processes in the boot sequence report problems, including "Segmentation fault", "Aborted", and "malloc: assertion botched". These results appear to be non-deterministic--different processes fail with each boot, but as memory pressure increases, the problems appear to increase in frequency.) In an effort to help debug this, I recompiled the stock Debian kernel with CONFIG_DEBUG_HIGHMEM enabled, but sadly I don't see that much more got logged. Here is the diff between the Debian stock kernel config and the one I am using now: $ diff -u /boot/config-2.6.26-1-powerpc-smp /boot/config-2.6.26 --- /boot/config-2.6.26-1-powerpc-smp 2009-01-10 10:40:57.000000000 -0500 +++ /boot/config-2.6.26 2009-04-06 04:17:55.000000000 -0400 @@ -1,7 +1,7 @@ # # Automatically generated make config: don't edit # Linux kernel version: 2.6.26 -# Sat Jan 10 13:43:00 2009 +# Mon Apr 6 04:17:55 2009 # # CONFIG_PPC64 is not set @@ -3288,7 +3288,7 @@ # CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK_SLEEP is not set # CONFIG_DEBUG_LOCKING_API_SELFTESTS is not set # CONFIG_DEBUG_KOBJECT is not set -# CONFIG_DEBUG_HIGHMEM is not set +CONFIG_DEBUG_HIGHMEM=y CONFIG_DEBUG_BUGVERBOSE=y # CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO is not set # CONFIG_DEBUG_VM is not set Please also find the following four (4) attachments: 1) kernel logs without "mem=768M" on the kernel command line 2) kernel logs with "mem=768M" on the kernel command line 3) as 1), but with timestamps stripped 4) as 2), but with timestamps stripped The reason for 3) and 4) is that they are more easily compared with, e.g., vimdiff.
