it does up to 32, just boot with nr_uarts=16 or 8250.nr_uarts=16

Ah, vielen Dank! I will forward the information to my colleague,
who actually works on RS232/485. He tried, IIRC, sysctl of
exactly this value at runtime and it didn't work, so he gave up
too early...
