That would seem to rule out a hardware problem.

First, if you're using a USB keyboard, consider attaching a PS/2 one. If that
works fine (after this problem occurs), then you'll be able to run dmesg or
grab the content of /var/log/dmesg.
If that doesn't work (and it might not), there is a possibility that you
won't find any saved kernel log text corresponding to this. At this point,
you'll need to use netconsole to send kernel log messages over Ethernet to
another computer (and make sure that, on that computer, you're writing the
output to a file). For details of how to do this, see:

It may also be worth upgrading to 2.6.32.
