It seems that in sid the driver does not work at all in WPA mode. Here's
the story:

I tried looking for a Debian live CD featuring sid/squeeze kernel, but
could not find one (live.debian.net seems to only have lenny 5.0.2
images).

So I downloaded a usb stick debian-installer image together with a
netinst iso image and booted off that. After a lot of retries [1] I
managed to get it to a stage where it has detected the network hardware
(identifying it as XXXXXXXXXXXXX), but is not able to configure WPA
(only WEP seems to be supported by d-i). So after some more retries I
copied wpa_* programs together with their required libraries onto the
loaded ramdisk using the usb stick.

Then I tried configuring the network with the following command:

  /wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/wpa.conf

and the configuration in /wpa.conf (based on the config file which works
for me on the same machine in lenny (though with the NDIS driver)):

  | ap_scan=1
  | fast_reauth=1
  | network={
  |   priority=100
  |   ssid="ZyXEL-MnM"
  |   scan_ssid=1
  |   key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
  |   psk="My-passphrase"
  | }

However it seems the connection cannot be established. What I get is
(retyped manually from the screen, so there may be some typos):

regards,

[1] It takes a lot of time and effort, because:

 a) my laptop screen is broken, just about 20% of screen area is visible
 b) because of (a), I have to use an external monitor
 c) the external monitor socket and usb socket are placed in such way,
    that it's impossible to have them both in use at the same time.
 d) in many cases, when I unplug the USB stick to plug the monitor in
    (to see what's going on), the installer does not like it, and
    subsequently refuses to read the USB stick, so I have to start
    from scratch
