Bug#544524: raid1 continuously attempts resync without having a spare, apparently leaking memory

Package: linux-image-2.6.30-1-powerpc
Version: 2.6.30-6
Severity: normal

Hi,

I have a raid1 between two PATA disks, and one of them failed during an
array check; as these are consumer disks (Maxtor 5A300J0), these are
somewhat reluctant to report hard errors but rather retry when asked, so
the array did not kick the disk out (which is probably a bug in itself).
After manually setting the disk as "failed", the kernel went into a loop
trying to resync the array, even though there is no spare available, which
then immediately fails and is retried. During this, the amount of nonshared
pages in the system steadily increased, and the system was in iowait state
most of the time (see attached graphs).

Removing the disk from the array is not possible because it is "busy";
neither is decreasing the number of RAID disks.

   Simon
