Since gspca was taken into the mainstream kernel, V4L1 apps cannot
access my Logitech QuickCam Messenger USB camera.
The following works fine (using V4L2):
mplayer -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0 -fps 25 tv://
However, the following shows colorful noise:
mplayer -tv driver=v4l:device=/dev/video0 -fps 25 tv://
The following message keeps appearing on the console:
ioctl mcapture failed: Invalid argument
With a slightly different GSPCA webcam, I get a segfault instead.
Luckily, mplayer can use both V4L and V4L2. However, not all
applications are that smart. For example, Skype seems to only use V4L,
and breaks with the GSPCA webcam.
A workaround has been suggested on forums, namely to set:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
This indeed fixes both mplayer and Skype. However, before gspca was
taken into the mainstream kernel, no such problem existed. Workarounds
like this should not be necessary.
