Subject: kernel-image-2.6.18-3-486: frequent "invalid opcode" calls cause crashes
Package: kernel-image-2.6.18-3-486
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***

On a AMD K6-2 400, using this kernel I continuously encounter kind of core
dumps, /var/log/messages snippet included below.

First, I thought this could be a side effect of the system clock running twice
as fast as usual (i.e. every one second, the clock ticks two seconds).
Assuming, that could be related to the RTC, I installed ntpd, ntpdate,
chrony to get rid of that. Then I noticed the "invalid opcode" dumps first;
I presumed, they sprung into action the moment, ntpd*/chrony attempted to
set the clock back. Hence, I removed ntpd/ntpdate/chrony, but the dumps
continued to appear.

On irc://irc.freenode.net/#debian, user xingu provided me with a kernel
parameter for grub's menu list (deboptions=clocksource=tsc), which made the
clock run at normal speed again. But still, the dumps didn't go away.

As a last resort, I replaced hardware, but the problem's still there. -- At
least on Sarge's 2.6.8 kernel, I didn't encounter any issue like this one.

Despite I'd like Etch to be released soon, I consider this problem important
enough to be reported. Sorry for providing this as another possible delay
for Etch. :-(

NB: As an absolutely last resort, just before filing this bug report, I
uninstalled "acpid" and "hal" packages. During writing this bug report,
I encountered no such issue at all; but that could be a random even, and
the box would crash later...

From /var/log/messages, I cut a complete cycle from restart to crash.
Hopefully, that might tell you anything:
