How this is displayed is a function of your debconf frontend. You seem
to have chosen to use the readline frontend, and do not have
libterm-readline-gnu-perl installed, so it cannot display default
values. If you did have that package installed, you would see:

    Abort kernel removal? yes_

Which clearly shows the default and shows that it's a yes/no question.

Of cource other frontends handle this differently. The much more
commonly used dialog frontend just displays a dialog box with Yes and No
buttons.
