These boot parameters worked to log console messages:
  console=ttyS0,9600
But the other way around, desktop logging laptop,
  console=ttyUSB0,9600
didn't.  Had to hard reboot. The laptop doesn't have a serial port.

There's not much point in keeping an exotic wontfix wishlist bug open, so
