just installed linux-image-2.6.31-rc3-686. It looks pretty fine.

nvidia needed a patch

It is working as expected. Good work. Thanks to all involved.

funnily upstream gave no default on that Kconfig option,
thus it defaults to no. next rc3 has it set to modular.

anyway next time a polite mail would do a better job.
