That depends on whether the update changes the kernel ABI (the interface
exposed to modules).  Debian adds a numeric suffix to the upstream
kernel version to indicate ABI changes, which appears in binary package
names and in the kernel version reported by "uname -r".  External
modules must be rebuilt whenever the kernel ABI changes and the ABI
number will also be included in their binary package names.
