aha that could be the culprit:

trickier, no tree on this machine (yet), will find do for
now?
/etc/modprobe.d
/etc/modprobe.d/libpisock9.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.dpkg-old
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.dpkg-old
/etc/modprobe.d/aliases
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/arch-aliases.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/mt-st.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/ibm_acpi.modprobe.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/arch.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/arch.conf/x86_64
/etc/modprobe.d/arch.conf/i386
/etc/modprobe.d/pnp-hotplug.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/aliases.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/bluez.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/linux-sound-base_noOSS.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/oss-compat.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base-blacklist.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/hsf.conflicts.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/display_class.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/arch
/etc/modprobe.d/hsf.conf
Just performed
rmdir arch
mv arch.conf arch
and then
dpkg --configure -a
This appears to have unstuck dpkg/apt!
I wonder if I did something dumb like
rename 's,^(.*)$,$1.conf' in /etc/modprobe.d to try and
shut out Marco's annoying warning messages?
Thank you for your help.
