You can find the .config file from the current Debian > kernels under /boot Tried with a custom build of 2.6.28-rc9 and problem was still reproducible, then realized that, for some reason, the parameter "acpi=off" was being added to new kernel entries in my menu.lst while original 2.6.18 lacked it... removing this parameter fixed the problem with both 2.6.26 and 2.6.28-rc9.
