For the Debian testing version of the snd_hda_intel kernel module, there was
nothing but a hum from the speakers for the g33/ich9 Intel chipset for my
ASUS P5K-V MB. After updating to the current debian unstable form of this
module, I do get intelligible sound from the speakers for the first time,
but there is still an audible hum which detracts from the quality of the
sound.

I am just using the default Alsa handling of modules since
/usr/share/doc/alsa-base/README.Debian.gz seems to imply using
the traditional /etc/modprobe.d/sound approach will not work
for udev. In any case, I am getting intelligible sound from the speakers
so I think the alsa module configuration must be okay. Here are the
contents of /dev/snd

alsamixer has no master volume control, but it does have "PCM", "Front", and
"Line" volume controls. The first two work to change the volume of "aplay"
results, and the last two work to change the volume of "tvtime" television
output from my TV card which uses a jumper cable to line-in on the sound
chip to deliver the audio to the system.

If you can recommend some non-default configuration I could do to reduce,
the hum, let me know.

Aside from the hum, snd_hda_intel from Debian unstable seems to be
basically working for the first time for snd_hda_intel and the Intel
g33/ICH9 chipset.

I suspect the hum is just the sign of an immature Alsa device driver for
this new hardware combination, but I thought a "for-the-record" bug report
should be done to inform others of the status of snd_hda_intel for g33/ich9
for debian testing (nothing but hum), and debian unstable (intelligible
sound for the first time, but with some hum).

I am closing this bug report because hum is now gone completely.

I cannot pin down exactly what Debian testing software upgrade was
responsible for this improvement. Roughly 2 months ago the hum was reduced
some more by an alsa or kernel update, but there was some left so I didn't
record my alsa/kernel or comment further for this bug at that time. I
assume that improvement was the software update that sorted out all software
issues because today I discovered that reseating some audio connectors
sorted out the rest of the hum problems.

My current kernel is 2.6.24-1-amd64, and my current alsabase is 1.0.16-1.1
so anybody else with the Intel g33 chipset (identified as Realtek ALC883 by
alsamixer) should have excellent sound quality with that combination of
kernel and alsa.
