Hi,
I use a AMD K9-CPU in 32bit mode (i386 architecture) und used to install
the linux-image-2.6-k7-package in testing. Today, it got transitional
and points to linux-image-2.6-686 which should be used on Intel-CPUs. On
the other hand I recognized that linux-image-2.6-amd64 now also
provides a package for the i386-architecture. My question is, which
kernel fits better (I know that there is not that big differences in
the linux kernel and performance improvements but this is an issue that
makes me wonder...)
My problem are the current package descriptions that are IMHO not that
clear. Some name the names of CPUs some not. Here are some examples:

linux-image-2.6-amd64:
This package depends on the latest binary image for Linux kernel 2.6 on
all 64bit single- and multiprocessor AMD and Intel machines.
linux-image-2.6.24-1-amd64:
This package provides the binary image and pre-built loadable modules
for Linux kernel 2.6.24 on all 64bit single- and multiprocessor AMD and
Intel machines.

This package description seems to be only only 64bit (amd64
architecture), so it does not fit to my i386 architecture. Maybe, some
CPU names should also be listed here...
The other package:

linux-image-2.6-686:
This package depends on the latest binary image for Linux kernel 2.6 on
Pentium Pro/Celeron/Pentium II/Pentium III/Pentium 4 machines.
linux-image-2.6.24-1-686:
This package provides the binary image and pre-built loadable modules
for Linux kernel 2.6.24 on Pentium Pro/Celeron/Pentium II/Pentium
III/Pentium 4 machines.

Here are the Intel-CPUs named, but I do have an AMD-CPU, so which one
should I choose?
I would propose the following package descriptions under the condition
that linux-image-2.6-amd64 could/should also be used (I currently run
it):

linux-image-2.6-amd64-*-proposal:
This package provides the binary image and pre-built loadable modules
for Linux kernel 2.6.24 on all lastest single- and multiprocessor from
AMD (like AMD Athlon 64 (X2), AMD Turion 64 (X2), AMD Opteron, AMD
Phenom) and Intel (Intel Core and Intel Core 2) machines. It provides
images for both the 32bit and 64bit architectures.

Thus, most of the PCs of the last years should use this kernel
linux-image-2.6-amd64.
Now my proposal for the other kernel-package:

linux-image-2.6-686-*-proposal:
This package provides the binary image and pre-built loadable modules
for Linux kernel 2.6.24 on Pentium Pro/Celeron/Pentium II/Pentium
III/Pentium 4 and AMD Athlon/Athlon XP and machines.
