Hi,
  I get the same error in lenny albeit on my sata hard drive. 
I have a dual boot machine. 
To reproduce the peroblem I need to power down my machine and 
then again power up after 10-15 seconds. 
If I directly boot into the lenny the below mentioned problem 
occures and as my drives are not recognised I am not able to
save the log. But if I first boot into windows, which boots 
successfully and then do a reboot and boot into lenny, there 
is no problem. Form this point onwards no matter how many reboot 
I do and what kind of sequence of OS I boot into everything works
 fine. If a do a power down then I again need to boot into
windows to bing my machine live.

I tried a patch provided here :

and it doesn't work out for me.
