Bug#481063: linux-image-2.6.25-1-686: vga=791 gets 'undefined video mode number'

I get the same error with 2.6.26-1-686.

Yet no errors with the kernels from kernel.org.

So I had a thought: recompile the Debian kernel with the .config I use. Guess what: no error.

So Maximilian was right when he pointed to the .config differences.

It's in the .config somewhere.
