Hi maks,

I've been thinking a bit more about how we could support ide-generic for
Lenny without loading it by default on systems that do not need it, but
also avoiding /etc/i-t/modules which results in it being loaded first,
thus potentially blocking other drivers.

My suggestion is to include your "old" Etch script again, but to only
actually run that if a (new) i-t config option is set.

In D-I we could then load ide-generic pretty much as was done for Etch,
and set that config option (in /etc/i-t/conf.d) _only if_ loading the
driver actually resulted in new block devices being created.

I'm not completely sure how etch->lenny upgrades for systems that need
ide-generic could best be handled. They would also need to be able to set
this config option somehow.

Some options would be:
- display a debconf note on upgrade if ide-generic is currently loaded and
ask whether it should remain loaded
- or better, if it is possible to see that ide-generic is actually in use,
automatically set the config option only in that case
- not do anything automatically, but support a boot parameter that will
load it so that users can then set the config option manually
- others?

The issue should probably at least be mentioned in the Release Notes.

What do you think?

Cheers,
FJP
