Bug#411499: Further Information on bug 411499
Hi,
I'd like to add some additional information on this topic because I have encountered similar problems with my Mustek MFS-6000CX and an Adaptec SCSI ISA controller AHA1542CF.
System is a PIII/700 with debian 4.0; 'uname -a' gives this output:
'Linux bulk 2.6.18-5-686 #1 SMP Mon Dec 24 16:41:07 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux'
modprobe aha1542 works; the SCSI adapter is recognized and its LED flashes. The attached scanner is also recognized: Vendor MUSTEK Model: MFS-06000CX.
The System will hang when xsane is called or it will hang when sane-find-scanner is called. When sane-find-scanner is called, I get a kernel panic message very similar to the one in the original report:
'Bad segment list supplied to aha1542.c (1, 0)

After what I've read here (http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-devel/2007-February.txt.gz), I have also tried Xubuntu 6.06 (Dapper) on exactly the same Hardware and everything (including the scanner) worked fine. I also assume that it is a problem that has to do with the AHA1542 kernel module and/or the kernel itself.
Note (1):
The system does NOT hang or produce any errors when the Scanner is NOT connected:

When I call sane-find-scanner after this, it just doesn't find a scanner, but no hang or kernel panic is caused. The problem might therefore have to do with specific calls that are invoked by mustek-specific things whithin sane or with the way the SCSI-Adapter (AHA1542) acts when the scanner is attached.
Note (2):
When I try to use this same adapter with this same motherboard and kernel version to connect hard drives, I do not encounter any problems. When I compile the AHA1542 module into the kernel, I can even boot from a SCSI drive attached to the AHA1542.
