The thecus has Realtek RTL8110SB NICs, not sky2.

I'll try and reproduce it again this week (awaiting a HD RMA from
Western Digital)

I'll also be attempting a firmware upgrade on the thecus to let me use
redboot to choose kernel images, which will let me try > 2.6.22. However
if the issue is present in 2.6.18.dfsg.1-18 (i.e., latest kernel
available in Etch)

I do not think the bug should be closed (use versioning if you want to
ignore it) as long as it is present in a package in Debian. I think a
backport of the patch that resolves it should be considered for an Etch
revision release -- this is a bit of a show-stopper for many networked
applications with this driver.
