Just mentioning that the hotfix mentioned here: http://www.ping.uio.no/~mortehu/disable-vmsplice-if-exploitable.c appeared to have wedged (crashed hard, frozen) my machine, an otherwise very stable pentium 4 machine running 2.6.18-5-686 (with nvidia oldstable xorg proprietry drivers). nothing in syslog, etc.
