This is a similar bug to 353790 except it has not been resolved by using
a 2.6.16 kernel.

Summary: My system will randomly lock up whilst running a pre-packaged
Debian 2.6.16 kernel, or whilst running the 2.6.16.17 kernel downloaded
as source from kernel.org, but experiences no problems running a 2.6.12
kernel packaged by ubuntu, nor a 2.6.15 kernel from the beta version of
the new ubuntu release. (This is running on a Debian etch system, but
using the ubuntu kernel package. I originally started using the ubuntu
kernel when the 2.6.14 Debian kernel failed to boot at all.)

Why a SATA issue: A lockup can always be induced by performing a
large amount of IO to my SATA drive (a Seagate barracuda). I cannot
find the original bug report now, but the resolution to that suggested
my original problems booting with the 2.6.14 kernel were sata_sis
related. The fact that the system is rock solid under other kernels
suggests some sort of kernel issue, potentially solved by a patch ubuntu
apply to their kernels since the same problem was experienced using a
non-Debian kernel from kernel.org. Unfortunately, no messages
ever appear in log files before a crash that would give any aid in
debugging this issue.
