Bug#460872: ipw3945d: Repeated microcode sw error cannot be recovered and renders driver unusable

Package: ipw3945d
Version: 1.7.22-4
Severity: important

A constantly repeated error shows at the console (Ctrl+Alt+F1):

ipw3945: Detected geography ABG (13 802.11bg channels, 23 802.11a channels)
ipw3945: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting.
ipw3945: Error Reply type 0x00000005 cmd ADD_STA (0x18) seq 0x047 ser 0x004A0000
ipw3945: Can't stop Rx DMA.

The above error occurs approximately twice per second. Restarting the ipw daemon has no
effect. It consumes a lot of resources because I can feel my system freeze twice a second
when the error occurs. I had to stop the ipw daemon to be able to make my system usable
again.
