No problem with that, even if IMHO 8M for an initrd by default is
quite a lot ;-)

After having tested that 2.6.22-1-amd64 worked OK, I've now switched
to 2.6.22-2-amd64 with MODULES=dep and it swill works OK:

luca@gismo:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=(hd0,1)/vmlinuz-2.6.22-2-amd64 root=/dev/mapper/vggismo-lvroot ro panic=5 vga=792 splash
luca@gismo:~$ 
=====
