Bug#409736: NFS upload causes unrelated applications to hang

Package: linux-image-2.6.18-3-amd64
Version: 2.6.18-7

I am using Debian Etch on a web server I maintain, and just came across what appears to be a serious kernel bug. When I attempt to upload a large (~1.5 GB) file to an NFS server, the transfer gets about half done, and then it hangs, along with several unrelated applications, for example apache, du, and w. I tried doing this three times, with various nfs settings, and the same thing happened each time. The unrelated applications are not using NFS for anything. They remain frozen for about 10 minutes, then finally spring back to life. NFS is completely unusable for me as a result.

After some searching, I found the following message on the Linux kernel mailing list which seems to describe exactly the problem I was experiencing:

   http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/12/14/448

Unfortunately this is a production server, so I can't install a debug kernel or try to reproduce the problem again. I don't have a non-production server available to try this on either.

Here's my kernel version:

Linux servilo.ikso.net 2.6.18-3-amd64 #1 SMP Mon Dec 4 17:04:37 CET 2006 x86_64 GNU/Linux

My shared C library version is 2.3.6.ds1-10. The server is a Xeon 3060 with 2 GB RAM and hardware RAID.

Let me know if there are any other details that would be useful for you.

Regards,
Clayton Smith
