you seem to have the broken initramfs 0.85d,
upgrade to 0.85e and depmod will again create modules.dep
on the fly. a bit hard to tell with the manko on information
of your mail, if your problem persits, submit a new report
with reportbug.

how about saying at which stage you throw that hook in.
anyway it is not needed.
