Bug#449438: linux-image-2.6.22-2-k7 kernel panic

I am trying to recompile the kernel but am stuck. I am a gentoo user so I am very familiar compiling kernels. When I do make menuconfig it tells me that /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22-2-k7/scripts/basic/Makefile: No such file or directory. The make file is in the main directory for the kernel. As the other information for uname -r I cannot get the correct version because I'm booted into an earlier version of the kernel. I'm copying the rest of the information asked for. I have hda instead of sda because of the kernel I'm using.

linux version 2.6.18-4-k7 (Debian 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2) (dannf@debian.org) (gcc version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)) #1 SMP Wed May 9 23:42:01 UTC 2007

Description: Linux 2.6.22 image on AMD K7
This package provides the binary image and pre-built loadable modules for Linux kernel 2.6.22 on 32bit AMD Duron/Athlon/AthlonXP/Sempron machines.

When I try to boot into this kernel I get a lot of errors which include:
/device/sys/blocks/sda/sda5/dev no such file or directory
/device/sys/blocks/sda/sda5/dev seems to be down
/bin/mknod missing operand after 'b'
kernel panic not synching
