Well, just to confirm, I have upgraded the latest installation to
linux-image-2.6.21-2-686 and upon powering down, then restarting the
system using the newest kernel image the unit worked just fine and DRM
was initialized. However, upon leaving the system idle for a period of
time it locked solid, so it seems to be something to do with DPMI and
the kernel.
On testing further I power cycled the machine and rebooted using
linux-image-2.6.18-4-686, then procedded to allow the power saving
functions of DPMI to execute as normally configured in the screensaver.
However everything worked perfectly and the machine resumed normally.
So the problem definitely seems to be with kernels --> 2.6.21-2-686
interacting with the radeon driver 1:6.6.3-2 to cause the machine to
completely lock, can't ssh in or anything.
