Write yourself a shell replacement then.
See #440712: v1-style naming is currently not supported by Debian's
mdadm because I lack the time to implement it, especially since it
would take considerably longer given how inconsistent upstream does
stuff.
If you want to take a stab, please do. I'll try to help you with
anything I can.
