Just because the problem is easily fixed doesn't mean it didn't cause my system to fail to boot. And when a system doesn't boot, it's essentially broken. 

So my actual problem is that I can't really recommend Debian to my friends and acquaintances if I think a kernel upgrade will break their system. This little problem of mine can, of course, be easily fixed by not recommending Debian.
