Bug#435280: #435280: black screen after X starts (Radeon Xpress 200M)

clone 435280 -1
reassign -1 xserver-xorg-video-ati
notfound -1 2.6.22-3
found -1 1:6.6.192-1
retitle -1 incompatible with kernel >=2.6.22 (Radeon Xpress 200M)
retitle 435280 incompatible with experimental xserver-xorg-video-ati
thanks

I realized that I had the experimental version of the X-server ATI
video driver installed on this laptop, so I downgraded that package to
the version in unstable, and the problem went away. Thus, the bug is
that kernel >=2.6.22 is incompatible with xserver-xorg-video-ati
>=1:6.6.192-1. For the record, I tried 1:6.6.193-1 as well; it has
the same problem. I don't know which of the kernel and the driver is
actually at fault so am duplicating the bug rather than reassigning
it.

To reiterate, the problem is that with the bad combination of kernel
and X video driver, after X starts, I get a totally black screen and
an unresponsive keyboard.  The computer is not altogether dead;
pressing the power button makes it shut down in an orderly manner.
