Bug#434867: linux-image-2.6.18-4-686: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2 hangs on boot after "USB disconnect"

Justification: breaks the whole system

After "aptitude upgrade"-ing the computer, which caused the 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2 of linux-image-2.6.18-4-686 to be installed, the computer freezes on boot somewhere after initializing the USB. Previously working kernel was 2.6.18.dfsg.1-11. The system is unusable, and I don't have RS-232 cables to grab the complete bootup log, but below is the end of the log:
