Bug#299670: Kernel 2.6.8-powerpc won't boot with Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick

I'm having the exact same problem with the exact same joystick,
but on an Intel laptop running Debian 2.6.8-2-686.

Here's where it gets more interesting: I've had two of the exact
same joysticks. One worked, one doesn't. (The working one is in
transit; when I have both in hand I'll perform more tests and
report back.)

I'm getting the impression there's some sort of timing problem,
with an expected message not being received or acknowledged or
something, and gumming things up. I'm occasionally seeing the
message

	hal.hotplug[4608]: timout(10000 ms) waiting for /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.1/usb2/2-1/2-1:1.0

And when the USB input subsystem is trying and failing to talk to
this joystick, it tends to lose track of my regular USB mouse,
and I have to reboot to fix it.
