- Subject: libata-related kernel panic on boot during S10checkroot.sh

Package: linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64 Version: 2.6.18-2 Severity: important From time to time if I boot my amd64 machine with its three SATA disks over which a RAID1 provides the root disk, the kernel panics while executing S10checkroot.sh The panic relates to libata, but I cannot get more information without copying the entire screen by hand. I cannot scroll back. Only a hard reset works. Right after the panic, the device name of the third of the three SATA disks is echoed to the terminal with two spaces up front: /dev/sdc and some times, it then says "Activating swap", but most of the time it does not get this far. There are no problems with the latest 2.6.17 kernel in sid. I'd be happy to help pinpoint the problem if people held my hand. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17-2-amd64 Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64 depends on: ii e2fsprogs 1.39-1.1 ext2 file system utilities and lib ii initramfs-tools [linux-initra 0.82 tools for generating an initramfs ii module-init-tools 3.2.2-3 tools for managing Linux kernel mo linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64 recommends no packages. -- debconf information: shared/kernel-image/really-run-bootloader: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/postinst/old-dir-initrd-link-2.6.18-1-amd64: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/postinst/old-system-map-link-2.6.18-1-amd64: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/preinst/initrd-2.6.18-1-amd64: linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/postinst/depmod-error-2.6.18-1-amd64: false linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/preinst/elilo-initrd-2.6.18-1-amd64: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/postinst/bootloader-error-2.6.18-1-amd64: linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/prerm/would-invalidate-boot-loader-2.6.18-1-amd64: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/postinst/old-initrd-link-2.6.18-1-amd64: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/postinst/kimage-is-a-directory: linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/preinst/lilo-has-ramdisk: linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/preinst/abort-install-2.6.18-1-amd64: linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/preinst/overwriting-modules-2.6.18-1-amd64: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/postinst/create-kimage-link-2.6.18-1-amd64: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/preinst/already-running-this-2.6.18-1-amd64: linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/prerm/removing-running-kernel-2.6.18-1-amd64: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/preinst/abort-overwrite-2.6.18-1-amd64: linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/preinst/lilo-initrd-2.6.18-1-amd64: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/postinst/depmod-error-initrd-2.6.18-1-amd64: false linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/preinst/failed-to-move-modules-2.6.18-1-amd64: linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/preinst/bootloader-initrd-2.6.18-1-amd64: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64/postinst/bootloader-test-error-2.6.18-1-amd64: -- .''`. martin f. krafft <madduck@debian.org> : :' : proud Debian developer, author, administrator, and user `. `'` http://people.debian.org/~madduck - http://debiansystem.info `- Debian - when you have better things to do than fixing systemsAttachment: signature.asc
