Thanks for your help.  I'm not knowledgeable enough to understand what's
keeping me from booting into the older kernel, so am unable to help
further with that.  But the signs I mentioned and your summary suggest
that the kernel upgrade broke something controlling all the lights in the
keyboard (Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 v1.0) except the F-lock key.
