Bug#422410: sk98lin driver missing, skge does work in promiscuous mode

Package: linux-image-2.6.18-4-686
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch1

Hi,

My on-motherboard Ethernet adapter,

01:05.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 13)

is fully functional using the sk98lin driver but only partially
functional using skge: it appears that the latter is unable to put the
card in promiscuous mode.

Symptoms where observed when bridging: using the skge driver, the
bridge does not see any incoming packets on the interface handled by
skge except when the destination MAC is broadcast or the card's
address itself (this makes the bridge hopelessly unusable, of course).
Using sk98lin, the bridge behaves normally (so it's not a config
problem or anything).

What is the reason for removing sk98lin, anyway? Maybe skge is better
for some people, but isn't it safer to compile both? (Surely there
must be a more intelligent way of closing bug #404196, so that both
drivers are available when configuring modules manually but only skge
will be used automatically! Just deleting sk98lin from the config
seems a bit overkill, doesn't it?)

Happy hacking,
