Thanks for your answer and sorry for not being to
clear.
This message is displayed at updating Etch's
'original' 2.6.18-4-k7 kernel to the recently updated
one (2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch1). No selfmade kernel images
were involed.
The mentioned doc states that /sbin/update-grub 'will
be removed once Etch is release as stable', so this
wasn't supposed or guaranteed to work in the first
place.
