Bug#419475: linux-image-2.6.18-4-k7: erroneous behaviour of Realtek 8139, network practically unusable

I attach dmesg for 2.6.16.46 (last kernel I know that
works), 2.6.17 (also vanilla, fails the same as
2.6.18), and Debian's 2.6.18-4-k7

I have tried sid's 2.6.20-1, and it doesn't even boot.
I have not physical access to machine, but for what
operator has told me about messages on console, it
seems that nvidia nforce's 2 PATA is detected as SCSI
on 2.6.20. Is that true or is it any kind of emulation
that can be disabled?

SCSI device sda: 156299375 512-byte hdrw sectors
(80025MB)

I'm sure that this 80 GB disk is a Paralell IDE one.

If it's true, I'll have to wait to get physical access
to computer, because I cannot change fstab without
being sure that it will boot and let me connect in.
I need to be sure that I will be able to retrieve
access again simply rebooting with a different kernel,
and this will not be the case if I change fstab.

Thank you very much!
