Bug#417534: USB card reader detected before SCSI disk; root fs not found

Package: linux-image-2.6.18-4-k7
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12

In the past I have usually compiled my own kernel, mainly out of
interest. However, I don't really have time for that anymore, and
would like to switch to a precompiled kernel.

My PC has an Adaptec 29160N with a single hard disk attached. Device
detection during boot takes quite a long time -- easily 15 seconds.

It also has an internal USB memory card reader, which appears as four
USB storage devices.

The problem is that my SCSI disk is usually "sda", but with the
current precompiled kernel, the USB devices appear first -- so the
SCSI disk becomes "sde", etc. I'll attach a boot log (captured via
serial port).

My homebrew kernel doesn't suffer from this problem because the
Adaptec driver is compiled into the kernel image, there's no
initramfs, and the USB storage drivers are modules.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
