It feels bad to open a RC bug on the kernel at this time, and I've
thought about it more than once, but *I* do not see a reason to
downgrade the severity.  Feel free to do so if you find one ;-)


I have recently installed etch freshly on a IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T43p,
see also my (successfull) installation report in #410710.  It came with
the last kernel version, and was updated now to also have 2.6.18-4-686.

However, the new kernel does not boot.  If this is really due to a bug
in the kernel, I think it is RC because I don't have any opportunity to
get security or other kernel updates from Debian.  Here's is what I
wrote down from the screen I see after selecting the new kernel in grub:

This looks identical to me except for the s/3/4/, so I don't see a
configuration error.  This is the mount scheme:

Indeed, it wasn't.  It was a problem with the generation of initrd.img -
the generated version had a size of a couple of bytes only, and
dpkg-reconfigure fixed it.

Although I'd like to know what happened, I don't think it makes sense to
investigate this unless it happens again when a kernel is installed, and
am therefore closing the bug.

No, it didn't.  But a kernel option "vga=0x31A" showed me that after
switching the resolution, less than one screen with only boring
information was displayed.  This prompted me to look at the ramdisk
size...
