I'll be more specific.  I ran as root:

% modprobe -r ehci-hcd

Then disconnected the MP3 player, and reconnected.  The device was accessed using the uhci_hcd
driver as shown below.

So now it worked, but not using its full capability as a USB 2.0 device.
