When I choose to restart my MacBook Pro, it shuts down the system,
plays the Apple chime and displays a grey screen, then displays a
black screen and nothing further happens. The fans are still active.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, when I tried it, it
rendered my system unbootable. I ended up having to reinstall. The
problem is now fixed, but I don't know if it's due to that or to some
other change I made when I reinstalled. In any case, I'll close the
bug and reopen it (or file a new one) if the problem reappears.
