I've tried:
 make-kpkg clean
 make clean
 make mrproper
  make clean mrproper
and all continue to die in exactly the same place.  Different 
version of gcc being used?

I think I'll download this and try it.  But I would imagine I 
first need to compile the UML kernel?  Oh well, lots of fun.  :-)
