I'm having similar problems, however, I'm having problems with samba (and NFS as
well, but not really tested that). The problem seems more obvious with wireless
and WAN connections (through vpn's). So it seems the problems show better on
unreliable connections. On the direcly connected LAN, the problem is hardly
visible. 
I'm experiencing this on 2 NSLU2 boxes with different HDs and filesystem
backends, but both with debian 2.6.18-3-ixp4xx kernel.
