Bug#405332: linux-image-2.6.18-3-686: Boot failure - IDE drivers fail to detect HW.
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-3-686
Version: 2.6.18-3
Severity: important
After upgrading to 2.6.18 I am no longer able to boot the machine,
as the IDE drivers fails to load correctly.
If I remember correctly, kernel-image-2.6.11-1-686-smp was the last
kernel package that worked on my MicroStar 694D Pro (MS-6321) box.
What seems to hapen is that the ide_generic driver detects the P4IIX
IDE controler in legacy mode as it should.
However later when the piix and pdc202xx_old drivers are loaded these
fail to detect the the respective IDE controlers as they should.
Consequently the the boot fails due to a timeout searching for the
root partition, as the boot and root partitions are on a disc
connected connected to the second (undetected pdc20265) IDE
controller.
This problem seems to be triggered by a kernel configuration change,
enabeling ACPI on older (buggy) BIOS impementations.
Suggested fix
=============
Reenable the blacklisting of older ACPI implementations.

2) Higher advertised frequencies have a higher performance
3) No duplicate frequency values are reported by the BIOS

<name>DSDT AML verification</name>
<result>0</result>
<description>This test first disassembles the DSDT of the BIOS, and then uses the IASL compiler from Intel to recompile the code. The IASL copiler is much stricter in detecting deviations from the ACPI specification and can find numerous defects that other AML compilers cannot find. Fixing these defects increases the probability that the BIOS will operate well with a variety of operating systems.</description>
