I've discussed the changes needed for Niagara support on sparc with Fabio, who maintains sparc kernels for Ubuntu. His opinion was that it's not very feasible to backport it to 2.6.16. Basically, if we decide to stick with 2.6.16, all the arch/sparc64 tree will have to be replaced by the one from 2.6.17, if we want to see Niagara support in etch.
