initrd-tools is deprecated.

Both of its successors - initramfs-tools and yaird - support LVM (to
varying degrees). Comparable info here:
http://wiki.debian.org/InitrdReplacementOptions

Initramfs-tools is the one used by default in Debian unstable.

(Sven probably has some other info to add here as well ;-) )
