Ok, I've tested and it definitely seems that
linux-image-2.6.15-1-amd64-k8 version 2.6.15-7 is not affected by the
network/SATA hang (bug #347412)

I haven't tested 2.6.15-7 SMP, but all the previous 2.6.15-X SMP
versions were affected, so...

[This is a dual-core athlon 4400, so it'd be nice to get 2.6.15 running
on it, 'cause then the clock is sane...]

BTW: Trying 'nosmp' as a kernel command line argument to 2.6.15-7 SMP
causes a panic during insmod in the initrd.
