It to me is very clear now the issue is related to SATA i/o.Both my harddrive and dvd drive are on a ICH8 southbridge. The JMB361 on the motherboard remains unused because of severe problems. Either (driver) seems to blame.
The system continues to hang upon a windows installation in a vmware environment.
