still no evident error at any places that changed for 0.85d,
nor at any other place.

can you please send me privately that file foo ? :)

anyway i'm on a totaly false piste, i need more of your
boot log? 
your second message gives a hint on modules.dep missing,
do you get dropped into a console?
what does a call from there with
depmod -a 
give from output.
